Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing

The Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing is a minimum 60-graded credit hour degree. 
At least 4 credit hours in WR 552 must be in genres other than your principal genre.
A cumulative GPA of 3.00 (or better) is required for all courses counting toward the degree.
A maximum of 15 transfer credits can be applied to EOU’s MFA degree.
Practicum should be planned before the second Summer Residency and implemented during the residency.
Students wishing to pursue a third year in another genre should expect to repeat their second-year curriculum in that other genre. Minimum of 90 total degree credits for an additional 3rd-year in the second genre.

Program Requirements: 45 credits


Residency Courses: 12 credits


All courses in this section require a minimum of 4 credits. Courses are repeatable.

Post-Residency Course: 2 Credits


Devoted to the polishing work begun during the Summer Residency

Distance Courses: 46-73 credits


Electives: 15 credits


Complete elective credits to reach 60 credits for the degree. Students must take one or both of WR 536 or ENGL 536.

Total credits required for major: minimum of 60


Students interested in completing a 3rd year in a second genre must complete a minimum of 90 credits
