The College of Education offers 5 Majors, 1 Minor, 1 Associate of Arts, 2 Undergraduate Certificates, Career and Technical Education licensure courses, 3 Master’s Degrees, 3 Graduate Endorsements, 1 Graduate Specialization, and 3 Graduate Certificates. The college is home to Eastern Oregon University’s (EOU) professional programs in Teacher Education, the Master of Science in Education, and the Master of Social Work. Approximately one-third of EOU’s graduates select majors or licensure programs offered in the College of Education. The faculty of the College of Education is dedicated to meeting the University’s mission of serving rural Oregon and beyond through professional programs of instruction, research, and service.
The faculty of the College is committed to quality learning opportunities for our students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Each program is grounded in current theory and strong subject matter expertise, complemented by opportunities for application through field experiences and clinical practice.
The College of Education offers three undergraduate educator preparation programs. The undergraduate educator preparatory program for elementary teachers is a major in Elementary Education with an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) concentration. The special education initial teacher licensure (SEITL) undergraduate program has a generalist focus that prepares students to teach prekindergarten to grade 12 assignments in special education. Students who transfer with an AAOT or equivalent degree complete the relevant Content Area Pathway in lieu of the full Multidisciplinary Studies major. In addition, at the undergraduate level, the College of Education offers a major in Early Childhood Education and a minor or a concentration in ESOL-neither leads to preliminary teacher licensure.
At the graduate level, the College of Education offers three graduate programs: the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT), the Master of Science in Education (MS), and the Master of Social Work (MSW). The MAT program is an educator preparation program at the elementary or secondary levels, leading to preliminary teacher licensure in Oregon. The MS program is a master’s degree with a designated concentration and a focus on research. It does not lead to preliminary teacher licensure. The MSW program is entirely online and equips graduates to become solution-driven social workers prepared for various professional settings. The College of Education offers endorsement preparation programs in ESOL, Special Education, Reading Intervention, and a specialization in Trauma in the Educational Communities at the graduate level. Courses in these programs can be applied towards the MS program. The MSW program is entirely online and equips graduates to become solution driven social workers prepared for various professional settings. The generalist program prepares students for licensure as a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW). The advanced generalist approach allows students interested in clinical work to be prepared to sit for licensure but is also attractive to students who may not want to achieve licensure or want to do community or administration work.
The College of Education aims to prepare our graduates for life in a complex society by allowing each student to develop characteristics that distinguish the educated citizen. The College provides students with the opportunity to develop proficiencies in the following University Learning Outcomes:
