The College of Education is dedicated to providing high quality teacher preparation programs. Program requirements are responsive to external accreditation and to the rules established by the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) and the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP). It is important that interested students obtain the most current advising information by consulting education advisers and obtaining the most current College of Education advising handbooks and admission materials.
There is one option leading to preliminary teacher licensure for prekindergarten - grade 12 special education teachers. The special education initial teacher licensure (SEITL) undergraduate program requires students to complete 76 credits of coursework, practicum and student teaching experiences. New cohorts begin each fall and students are required to complete all courses in the program, in the order they are offered. The program is offered in a hybrid format, which means that all program courses are conducted through Zoom. The program is ideal for classified school district employees who need to keep their jobs working as education assistants or paraprofessionals in classrooms, but want to eventually become special education teachers. Since the program includes classroom-based practicum and student teaching experiences, it is possible for students to satisfy these credit requirements in the classroom they are working in for their job. Students may transfer into the program with an AAOT degree or by completing a major in Multidisciplinary Studies.
EOU’s teacher preparation programs have a competitive admissions process. Admission to the University does not guarantee admission to the professional education component of any particular education program. The Undergraduate Elementary Education, SEITL undergraduate program is limited in the number of students who can be accepted each year. Only the most qualified candidates will be considered for admission. Specific guidelines for admission to program are published each year.
