SOC 375 - Sociology of Food*SSC Credits: 5
How can food and eating be sociological? In this course, we explore the relationship between food and issues of culture, access, and inequalities by drawing upon a variety of perspectives to examine the social processes that shape how food is produced, prepared and consumed. First we begin by exploring the emergence of food as a subfield, before examining social and cultural identities associated with food. Then we will explore how access to food and resources intersects with experiences of privileged and oppressed identities. We investigate the role food and food systems in our economy and how they contribute to social differences. We examine food by analyzing consumption patterns, gendered embodiment. globalization, and social change through a sociological lens. Students will synthesize this Information in a final project analyzing representations of food in media.
