English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Minor

A minimum of 30 graded credit hours
At least 28 credit hours must be upper division
A minimum grade of “C-” is required in all courses counting toward the minor and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 is required to complete the minor. 
A minimum of 15 graded credit hours counting toward the minor must be completed at Eastern Oregon University. S/U courses may not be elected for program requirements.
All transfer courses must be approved by the ESOL team leader, a syllabus is required for each ESOL course.
ESOL program practica (90 hours) must be completed at EOU, which includes ED 421 , ED 421L , and ED 479 . [On-campus only minor]

The ESOL minor prepares future teachers with the ESOL skills needed to successfully instruct English Learners from all over the world. It is a useful minor for those who wish to teach English in linguistically diverse schools in the United States, and for those who wish to teach English as a foreign language in another country. In addition, this minor provides opportunities for students in a variety of programs to learn more about diversity in the United States in the meaningful context of language studies.

The ESOL Minor (equal to a year of preparation) is designed for those seeking an endorsement in English for Speakers of Other Languages or wish to teach in the community or abroad. Candidates may add the ESOL endorsement to a license by completing the course of study; including 90 clock hours of  practicum, and obtaining a passing score on the TSPC-designated test.

Required Courses: 22 credits


Language Learning Experience


All ESOL minor candidates must demonstrate experience in non-native language learning. ESOL advisor must provide appropriate documentation.  [Fulfilled by course sequence or linguistic proficiency]

507 NSE Exam - English for Speakers of Other Languages [Passing score of 220 or higher]

Total credits required for minor: 30


If the requirements for the minor are not met at the time of graduation, the minor will not be awarded
